Louisville parts ways with Padgett

Louisville didn't take long to make its first offseason move, parting ways interim men's basketball coach David Padgett less than 24 hours after the Cardinals season ended.

The former Cardinals player was brought in to bring calm amid turmoil and upheaval after the school placed coach Rick Pitino on unpaid administrative leave following its acknowledgement that it was being investigated in a federal corruption probe of college basketball .

Padgett did his job. He went 22-14 after being elevated from second-year Louisville assistant last fall.


Arizona's Miller not a candidate at Pitt

PITTSBURGH (AP) Scratch Arizona coach Sean Miller off the list of potential coaches at Pitt.

Miller said in a statement Wednesday he isn't a candidate for the coaching vacancy created when the Panthers fired Kevin Stallings after two seasons earlier this month. Miller, who grew up in western Pennsylvania and played point guard for the Panthers from 1987-92, wished his alma mater luck in its search.


NC State to grant Yurtseven his release

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) North Carolina State coach Kevin Keatts says sophomore Omer Yurtseven intends to pursue a professional career or transfer.

Keatts said in a statement Wednesday that the Turkish 7-footer had notified him of his plans and that the program will grant Yurtseven's release.


Big East: Have 2-or-none not 1-and-dones

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) The Big East has recommended replacing one-and-done with a two-or-none policy in college basketball, along with NCAA regulation of agents and the creation of an elite player unit to focus on "players with realistic aspirations of playing in the NBA."

The Big East's recommendations come a week after a similar report by the Pac-12 for the NCAA's commission on college basketball, led by former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. The commission was created in response to a federal investigation into corruption in college basketball.

LOS ANGELES (AP) Robert Williams is a living, breathing, windmill-dunking advertisement for the upside of staying in school.

The Texas A&M big man with the 7-foot-5 wingspan clearly had all the physical tools to be a solid pro prospect last spring, and he could have followed dozens of major talents by spending what would have been their sophomore collegiate seasons on an NBA bench or in the G League.


Utah nips St. Mary's in OT, on to MSG

MORAGA, Calif. (AP) Sedrick Barfield scored 19 points and had three of Utah's four 3-pointers in overtime and the Utes beat Saint Mary's 67-58 on Wednesday night to advance to the semifinals of the NIT at Madison Square Garden.

Donnie Tillman added 17 points for Utah (22-11), which joined Gonzaga as the only teams to win at Saint Mary's this season.


WKU tops Oklahoma St. in NIT quarters

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) Freshman Taveion Hollingsworth matched his career high with 30 points and Western Kentucky advanced to the final four of the NIT for the first time since 1948 with a 92-84 victory over Oklahoma State on Wednesday night.

The fourth-seeded Hilltoppers (27-10) made 15 of 18 free throws in in the last three minutes to hold off the second-seeded Cowboys (21-15), who missed six of eight shots in the last two minutes.
