UConn prez: Ollie's violations 'serious'

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) UConn President Susan Herbst told Kevin Ollie she was upholding his firing because the former men's basketball coach had a pattern of breaking NCAA rules and committed serious violations, according to a letter obtained by The Associated Press.

The school released the June 19 letter from Herbst to Ollie on Monday in response to open records requests from the AP and other news organizations.

Ollie has asserted that the violations which led to his firing in March were minimal and isolated.

Evans hired as AD at Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) The University of Maryland has hired Damon Evans to be its athletic director, completing the transition that started in October when Kevin Anderson took a six-month sabbatical from the post.

Evans joined the school in December 2014. He was named acting athletic director when Anderson began his sabbatical and maintained that job after Anderson resigned in April.

Oklahoma State AD gets 3-year extension

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Oklahoma State athletic director Mike Holder has received a three-year contract extension, with his annual pay boosted to $950,000.

The deal was approved Friday by the Oklahoma State University/A&M Board of Regents. The new agreement with the 69-year-old Holder, who has been athletic director since 2005, begins July 1 and runs through June 2021.

Kentucky adding Stanford star F Travis

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) Kentucky is adding Stanford graduate transfer Reid Travis to its lineup.

Travis, a first-team All-Pac-12 selection twice with the Cardinal, announced Wednesday that he's transferring to Kentucky to pursue a master's degree.

Longtime Vols announcer Ward dies at 88

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) John Ward, the radio voice of Tennessee football and men's basketball for over three decades, has died. He was 88.

Vol Network tweeted that Ward died Wednesday night in Knoxville. Tennessee athletic officials confirmed Ward's death.

Duhon named Illinois State assistant

NORMAL, Ill. (AP) Former Chicago Bulls point guard Chris Duhon has joined the staff of Illinois State University as an assistant coach.

Illinois State coach Dan Muller announced Duhon's appointment Monday, saying he brings "a high level of on-the-court experience and success" to the university's basketball program.

Gamecocks' Martin gets Bowen going pro

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) South Carolina's Frank Martin understood all along he might never get to coach Brian Bowen in a game and is just happy the 6-foot-7 forward whose name is part of the federal corruption case in college basketball had the chance to spend a few months with the Gamecocks.

Bowen gave up his college career to turn pro last month when the NCAA informed South Carolina he would miss at least all of next season - his second full year on the bench - because of his alleged involvement in the scandal.

Kane joins Iowa State as assistant coach

AMES, Iowa (AP) Iowa State coach Steve Prohm has added James Kane to his staff as an assistant.

Prohm announced the hiring of Kane, a former assistant of his at Murray State, on Monday.
