Clemson not worried about depth at QB

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) Clemson coach Dabo Swinney is not concerned about his quarterback spot, even though the once-loaded depth at the position has been cut in half.

When the Tigers ended last season, the Atlantic Coast Conference champions appeared more than set behind center with Kelly Bryant returning as starter and three experienced backups who'd been through Clemson's system in Zerrick Cooper, Tucker Israel and Hunter Johnson.

And the cherry on top of the sundae was five-star recruit Trevor Lawrence, the country's top college prospect who surpassed the Georgia state high school marks of Clemson's national championship-winning passer Deshaun Watson.


Ex-Alabama DE McCants faces drug charges

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) A former defensive end for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the University of Alabama has been arrested on drug charges in Florida.

Pinellas County Jail records show 50-year-old Keith McCants was arrested early Monday near St. Petersburg. He's charged with a felony count of possession of crack cocaine and driving with a revoked or suspended license. He bonded out of jail, but records don't list a lawyer.


Evans hired as AD at Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) The University of Maryland has hired Damon Evans to be its athletic director, completing the transition that started in October when Kevin Anderson took a six-month sabbatical from the post.

Evans joined the school in December 2014. He was named acting athletic director when Anderson began his sabbatical and maintained that job after Anderson resigned in April.


WR Robertson leaving Cal after 2 years

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) Wide receiver Demetris Robertson is leaving California after two years.

Robertson tweeted Thursday that he's "decided not to continue my education and football career" at Cal due to personal matters. The tweet didn't elaborate and it didn't say what Robertson will do next.


Oklahoma State AD gets 3-year extension

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Oklahoma State athletic director Mike Holder has received a three-year contract extension, with his annual pay boosted to $950,000.

The deal was approved Friday by the Oklahoma State University/A&M Board of Regents. The new agreement with the 69-year-old Holder, who has been athletic director since 2005, begins July 1 and runs through June 2021.


Ex-Buckeye indicted for deputy assault

DELAWARE, Ohio (AP) A former Chicago Bears and Ohio State University football player who authorities say was ordered to leave a bar because he was intoxicated and stumbling has been indicted for allegedly slamming an Ohio sheriff's deputy arm with a van door.

Thirty-four-year-old Kirk Barton, of Dublin, was indicted Friday in central Ohio's Delaware County on assault and obstructing official business charges. Both are felony charges.


Vanderbilt DL Reitmaier eligible to play

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Vanderbilt defensive lineman Rutger Reitmaier has received a waiver from the NCAA that enables the Oregon transfer to play for the Commodores this fall.

School officials announced Wednesday that the NCAA had granted a waiver for Reitmaier.


Longtime Vols announcer Ward dies at 88

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) John Ward, the radio voice of Tennessee football and men's basketball for over three decades, has died. He was 88.

Vol Network tweeted that Ward died Wednesday night in Knoxville. Tennessee athletic officials confirmed Ward's death.


Wake Forest adds Villanova to 2020 slate

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) Wake Forest has added Villanova to its 2020 schedule while its game with Tulane that season has been pushed back to 2027.

Wake Forest officials announced a series of schedule changes Wednesday.
